Start from the footfall, not from the template
Most rota tools start from a copy of last week. Start instead from the shoppers you expect: the counter, or the till count divided by your conversion rate. The transactions that footfall generates, divided by what one associate can serve in an hour, is the selling labor the week needs, and the rota is built up from there.
Cover the doors first, then add the peaks
Hours open times the minimum people on the floor is the cover the store cannot open without. Back of house hours, receiving, cash-up and merchandising, sit on top. Only then do the peak hours go in, where the transactions per floor hour would otherwise climb past what your team can serve.
Read the labor percentage before you publish
Rota hours times the average wage, with employer taxes and benefits on top, divided by the week's expected takings. If the platform cannot show that number while the rota is still a draft, it is a calendar, and you will find out what the week cost from payroll.

Do we need predictive scheduling compliance built in?
If your store is in a city or state with a fair workweek law, the rules on advance notice and schedule change premiums are real and a platform that tracks them earns its fee. If you are not, the rule that matters is the one in your own head about how far ahead your team needs to know. Check your jurisdiction before you buy the feature.
